Evaluation question 4

How did you use new media technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation stages?

Throughout the project i used Youtube, mainly within the planning stage, i used youtube to research other music videos to give me inspiration on the route i wanted to go down. This was a key part of my research as it allowed me to analyse them and compare them to my own video.

Web 2 was a vital part in my project as once the video and adverts had been created Web 2 pages such as Youtube, Myspace and Facebook allowed the wider world to see and give feedback. After creating my video we put it on youtube for a month and it received 132 views. The majority of our views came from first view on channel page, which suggests its important to use these web 2 pages as by just adding the video and people have seen it on new videos and clicked on it is already allowing people to view it without even having to search for it, it's just there for them to view it. The second highest views came from referral from facebook, this again shows the importance of web 2 pages. By just me posting a status with the link to my video allows all my friends on facebook just to click it, again rather than searching for it. So by getting my video and putting it out there allows people to look at it, but may have not searched for it, in a way to increase the audience.

Youtube allows us to view were in which the people that has viewed our video are distributed over the world. As you can see from the map below, the most popular was the UK this was inevitable as a lot of my facebook friends are British, and the band are from Torquay so all their local fans will have viewed the video. However as you can see on the map people in America, Canada, Spain, Germany, Austria and Guatamala, although it may not be a huge amount of my total views but still some. It shows that i need to tag my video more carefully and more relevant to the British music scene, as I'm not trying to appeal to an Austrian audience and shows that by typing in something comes up with other relative videos with similar names. So that audience wont have been looking for my video but still have come across it. However this may not have been my fault it could have been people typing in Os Vampiros as there have been other bands in foreign countries with the same name, so either way it has taught me to be more specific when tagging my video.

Facebook was another vital part in my project, not only were alot of my views referred from facebook which allowed my target audience (17-25 year old males & females) as alot of my facebook friends fit within that. Facebook had a deciding role on what advert i used as i made 2 adverts promoting my DVD cover, i put them both on facebook and tagged some people in it allowing them to see the picture and give their feedback on it. This worked well as i received alot of comments on which one they preferred and a reason why.

By allowing the audience to decide which one they prefer then allows me to say that this is the advert that appeals best to that specific audience because they chose that one and facebook allowed me to achieve this.

Google was a key part of my research as it allowed me to search for other DVD covers by just typing it in and giving me the correct resources to deconstruct as part of my research, otherwise i wouldnt have been able to deconstruct DVD covers and adverts as well without even being able to see them. Also helping me come up with ideas for similar bands and producing ideas for similar videos which i then got from youtube.

Myspace is another web 2 social networking site which has been involved with my project as once i created my video i gave it to the band and they decided themselves to put the video on their Myspace page. This allows more people to see the work that i have done on a wider variety that like this music, as its on their page so their friends on myspace are people that like their music and interested in what they do, so they are the real judges for my video. Also gives me confidence as it received very good feedback from people i didn't even know and also the band have asked me to make another video for them. So overall i received good feedback through Myspace from the band and their fan-base.

The way in which we kept a log of our work was online, using blogspot. This worked out well as alot of our work was done online such as our research using youtube videos to deconstruct, blogspot allowed us to upload the video so the examiner can see the video and understand our analysis'. It also made it easier to log our work just after doing the work and shows a true reflection of our progress as it's all there in order of date and times. When adding our final products (video, digipack and advert) it made it easier to show the progress of making them using screenshots and uploading our latest work to how much we had actually done which again worked well as alot of work was done using computers.

Now moving onto the aspects which actually made the video such as camera's, tripod, video recorder, Imovie and photoshop.

Whenever me and the band decided to meet and up and film I took a camera along with me in order to get a few photos to add to my blog to show my progress. This was successful in a sense that some of the photos i took i later used for one of my adverts and for my digipack which wasn't my original intention but when it came to researching adverts it worked quite well and i decided to give it a go.

The video camera was an obvious part of creating the video as it records the video. I decided to use a tripod as it kept the camera static and level and alot of my shots were static shots so this was used intentionally, using hand held cam would create a different representation or maybe make it look worse. Also in my video there is a part were the band switch instruments several times so the camera has to be in exactly the same position each time for the frame to remain the same but the band members to have changed. Luckily each time i went to rehearsals to record footage i gathered enough in order for me not to have to go and re-film this is due to the fact i learned from my mistakes from last years practical production, and decided to film indoors for the idea if all fails i can just re-film but that wasn't necessary.

We used Imovie to edit our footage for our music video. Imovie allowed me to add all my footage together and cut into very small frames as my video has alot of cuts to give the video pace and is what i learned from my research that Indie videos have a large shot variety. Also Imovie allows us to add on special effects and transitions. Such as being able to add in fades to join 2 shots together in the opening scene to make the footage shorter and to make the jump cuts look softer.

Also using Imovie i was able to change all my footage to black and white by adding a filter and being able to edit the strength of the filter to my specific preference.

This is because the colours within the video were too strong and would have the audience focus on the wrong part of the frame. Also i was able to speed up some of my footage in order to show time pass and again continue with the pace of the video.

Photoshop was considered to be prosumer software and was the software we used in order to create and edit our digipacks and adverts. I had never used photoshop before so this was a challenge to get use to, i quickly picked it up and was able to use my specific requirements i wanted for my digipack and advert. I imported photos that i had taken when on set for recording. i was able to add a black/grey background, i knew the font i wanted in order to keep it simple.

I came up with a colour scheme which i decided i would stick to, which i used continually. On my digipack and advert i cut out individual shapes from the photos and added them all together and scaling them all into the right size.

I decided to put the band on the back but without a colour overlay, to allow the band to be recognised for what they look like and what clothes they are wearing. Instead i decided to transform the band members from the front onto the back so that they were facing the opposite way and in the wrong order opposite to them on the front. This links with my video as within the video the band members switched instruments between short clips so that the transition wasn't noticed. This subtle altering contributes to the representation of the band suggesting that they are a care-free, laid back, young, funny band.

By having a colour scheme already i decided i would add a colour overlay to stick with the colour scheme as it also makes it less busy and much more simple which is what i found from my research that other bands had done.

The advert was simple to make as according to my research bands had used the artwork for what they were promoting on the advert such as 'delphic', they were promoting their album and the same artwork was used. Therefore i decided to do the same so i simply had to copy everything over and rearrange it and add on any other information present. I felt photoshop was a good way to create our digipacks and adverts as it allowed us to learn a new way of creating something and was a challenge to some of us and also the possibilities are endless, so we just had to come up with what we wanted to do and then find the way to do it.

I felt i learned alot with the use of new equipment and software especially photoshop as i had never used it before and didn't even have a basic understanding of it, however this challenge was short-lived when i quickly was able to work out how to do exactly what i wanted and was a success. i leanred new techniques using the camera and Imovie as last year was the first time for using everything and i only knew the basics, now was a time to take it a step further and learn more complicated techniques such as time lapse, to show i am able to do so. Combining all software and equipment worked well as it was all a cycle to show my progress and each was as important as the next as the planning and research was vital yet so was creating the products itself. so everything fitted together.

Evaluation question 3

What have you learnt from audience feedback?

When creating a music video you ideally have a target audience in mind which is whom you aim the product at. This is important for smaller unsigned bands as they won't have an audience yet as they will have just emerged onto the music scene. Whereas mainstream bands have already targeted the audience in which they appeal to and their job is just to continue appealing to them. We found that our target audience would be both male and female as in the present day more females go to gigs and more female artists are arising in the indie scene, whereas 15 years ago the indie genre was overrun by males and that is who the industry had to please. However the industry didn't have to change to please the female audience, the females were drawn to the music and videos which were predominantly aimed at males however they didn't have strong connotations of this within the videos. So without realising the industry were appealing to both male and female. In some cases today videos target either male or female but some target both. Although my video has just 4 males in it i still believe it appeals to the female audience as that is the lifestyle some female artists have these days. And it doesn't have anything against females within my video therefore a unisex video. The age of people that are likely to watch this video would be between 17-30. The reason being is that the band are a local band and the venues in which they play in are pubs and indie clubs therefore this targets the people that are into this genre of music and the age of people that go to the indie clubs are usually 17-30 year olds as some underagers try and get in and succeed. Another reason as to why there isn't a dominant sex is that in the venues they play, there is always a mixture of both genders rather than just males/females. The indie genre has become more of a lifestyle over the past 15 years and is now a subculture in which young adults choose to follow. This is were they share similar tastes in music, clothing, clubs and lifestyle in general. People part of this subculture primarily wear skinny jeans, pumps and a t-shirt, this is sometimes the case for females as well but the female style is much more varied. The fact that there is only really one indie club in Torquay means that this is were all the indie bands play and have a loyal fan base as the audience would continue going there and as they have similar music interests then they tend to like the same bands.

I decided to put my music video onto youtube to use the ratings and comments to my advantage. I tagged my video with several other indie bands such as 'arctic monkeys' so that when people would look for arctic monkeys my video would come up and they may have a look and like the video. I decided that youtube wasn't good enough in the sense people have to look for the video therefore decided to promote it on social networking sites such as facebook so the video is just a click away.

As you can see from my video being on facebook it gained 30 views, which means 22% of my viewings came from promoting the link on facebook supporting the idea that web 2 creates a global village as i have friends on facebook all across the world allowing them to see it. When i had a look at the statistic data, it showed that people from Guatamala, America, Canada, Spain, Austria and Germany had watched my video, this wasn't intentional and suggests that i should be careful when tagging my video and add more tags that are more relevant to the British Music scene.

If i were simply just to tell people about my video it allows them to look for it themselves which could have happened as 23 of my views came from people typing in Os Vampiros and actually looking for the video. Also a high number of my views came from related videos so by adding more tags and more relevant tags will allow my video to appear in more related videos which is what people do in order to view more videos.

We as a class decided to have a screening of our videos in order to get audience feedback by handing out questionnaires and allowing them to give their opinion on our videos. From the answers i received from the questionnaires 90% of them believed that the video suited being a performance based video due to the genre, which supports all the research i did to find out which type of video to do. With 100% saying that this type of video matches other Indie videos which again supports the idea that this genre of music has a specific type of video which will always suit it.
The age in which i aimed my video at was between 17-30 and the majority of people stated that this video appeals to 15-25 year olds which is a similar age range to what i found from my research, maybe in the future aim to a slightly younger audience to increase the width of the audience already.
I used these questionnaires to find out what could be improved with my video for future reference, is that it should have a story to it, so give the video a narrative and to have more shot variety. This allows these criticisms to help me in the future if i am to ever make a music video again.
Interestingly enough i asked what gender the video appeals to and 80% put that it appeals to both male and female, which i justified in my research that allow it features only men, but the audience which enjoy Indie music has changed over time and in todays society is enjoyed by both male and female and the audience answering the questionnaires understood this.
I asked where in which they would watch this video, such as the channels it would be on and 100% put NME channel and 90% put MTV 2 and 70% put Q which supports my research in that NME is the channel to promote upcoming band which the audience have recognised and not all put Q becuase although it plays Indie music videos it tends to be more mainstream bands which again i think the audience have acknowledged .

I showed the band the video first in order to get their opinion on it and whether they like it or not. I gave the band the video and before i knew it the video was on their Myspace page which shows that they liked the video and want to promote it themselves. They thought the video matched their personalities and represented them in a natural way because i decided to film without them realising and they didn't know until they saw the video. Also from my questionnaires they thought the band were represented in a natural, quirky, witty, humorous, good looking, ordinary edgy, Indie, cool lads. Which is exactly what i was aiming for so this was successful as the audience recognised this. The band liked the idea that i turned a negative song into a positive way, as the song and lyrics are about the worst day of your life, so i decided not to use a Illustrative video which worked in my favour. The band felt that the video appealed to them and showed their friends who are between the ages of 19-30 and they liked it which means the video appeals to the target audience i was aiming at. They liked the idea also that it did appeal to both their male and femlae friends which was important to them as they have a lot of friends within both genders and they didn't want it just to appeal to male as that is then leaving out their female fans. They liked the idea of close ups on each band member when that instrument was prominant but felt there wasn't enough balance on all 4 band members and felt a bit more coverage on the drummer and the bass player would have made the video perfect.

I know the band liked the video because straight away they asked me to make another one which i agreed to do in the future, and by other bands seeing the video i have been asked my another Indie band, The Kedella's to make a video for them as well. So my video was successful within the local Indie bands and allows me to then get more work out there.

Evaluation question 2

How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts?

The second part of our promo package was to create a digipack and an advertisement promoting the DVD within our specific genre. When researching digipacks it was quite difficult to link them to my band, as alot of the indie bands that have released DVD's were much more mainstream and my band aren't mainstream as they aren't known. However what i did was look at bands first DVD's or make a general assumption about all of the digipacks together. I researched digipacks by Kings of Leon, Muse and The Killers. In all 3 there was a distinct pattern of abstract artwork but with some link to the purpose of the DVD which was promoting their live tour. I used a similar convention by making the band unknown to the audience. I did this by getting a photograph i took and cut out each of the band members individually and adding a cover overlay to them hiding their identity. Muse's HAARP had the main title as the largest letters with small silhouettes of the band and there instruments within the writing. I similarly used silhouettes of the band to hide there identity and create an abstract look. This is following the conventions of indie digipacks however still making the band known as the position of the band is shown in the video several times so the audience may be able to link them both.

I decided to keep the font simple which is what my research supported and primarily the bands name was in the largest font with the name of the product slightly smaller and any additional information even smaller. I decided to follow this convention as it is important to promote the bands name so the audience will want to find out more about them or if they want to search their web 2 pages its much easier. On my digipack i stuck with a continual colour scheme which is what kings of leon did with all black but an orange filter over the top. And Muse stuck with a black silver and gold colour scheme, keeping it simple again which relates back to my music video. My colour scheme was red, black and white. These colours go well and by having a black background means whatever is red or white will stand out because of the contrast between the colours.
My background colour is grey, this way it wasn't to strong on the eyes and felt as though the grey worked better than solid black, this is because a lot of indie bands have used solid black so i went against the conventional slightly in order for it to stand out above the rest, plus with it being grey it means the main focus will go straight to the red and white silhouettes rather than anywhere else.

On the back of the digipack is the 4 band members but they are reversed which will make the audience look at it twice as the band members are facing a different way and in a different order to those on the front. However this time there is no cover overlay this is crucial for a debut DVD as the audience its appealing to may not even know what the band look like. I worked out the mainstream bands don't have any band members on the covers as they are so well known they don't have to promote themselves. However with my band just upcoming they need people to know who they are so i felt adding them onto the back was necessary.

The second part was the magazine advert is similar to the digipack as it is much easier to make the link between the advertisement and the product its promoting if they both look the same. I used NME as my research as they promote alot of upcoming local bands not many people have heard of. In NME the advertisement promoting the product is the same artwork, so I decided that's what I would do as it only makes sense. For example Delphic, Acolyte, the artwork promoting the album is the same as the artwork on the album and is the same artwork promoting the album tour, therefore the audience are able to make that distinction between them all knowing they are all promoting the same thing.

I decided to make another advert in order to let the audience chose. My second advert was a photo of the band i had previously taken whilst filming in the car park. The photos were of high quality and i felt was acceptable to use. This advert was still promoting the digipack however instead of the DVD artwork was a phot of the band all stood in a line. I used the rule of thirds to seperate the bands name and the photo from the name of the DVD i was promoting. I changed the colour scheme to just a solid black background with whit only writing as the photo had more colours as the background of the photo was different shades of orange and just had more going on. I felt by adding the band in the advert was necessary as it then allowed the audience to recognise the band and if they are promoting live gigs the audience should know who they are. Or the fact that these photos are on their web 2 pages and then if the audience do their research will be able to make the link with the advert and their web 2 pages such as Facebook and Myspace. I minimised the amount of information on the front. this is because there was so much going on within the photo itself i thought the more simple it is the better. This is what i saw when researching in NME. The Delphic advert in NME had a detailed graphic win the centre and the writing was small and minimal to not draw the attention away from the graphic. I decided to follow this convention as it means the important information is noticed and the as well as the main photo.

Both of my products link back to my music video which is vital to make the connection between the music video, the digipack and the advertisement. In the video the performance part is black and white, this colour scheme is continued onto both my digipack and advertisement with the addition of red to make it more distinctive and quite simply stand out. Red is an eye catching colour. I kept the representation of the band the same also. The way they are positioned on the front of the digipack and the advertisement is the same as the way they are positioned in the music video. All stood together but with a bit of attitude to emphasise the idea that they dont care and this is the representation portrayed throughout the video. Also with the clothing they are wearing in the video is the same style as to what they are wearing on the back cover. To show that they are cool indie boys and rebelling against society with ties and leather jackets and this is the look they want to go for and use to represent them. It's important to maintain this representation as this is what is appealing to the audience and if this changes then it will change the target audience, when its vital to add on to the audience and appeal to a wider variety of people.

When looking at the package as a whole i think it would fit right into todays music industry as live music mainly from indie bands is thriving and my band would fit right in. I believe i went down the right path sticking to conventional indie music videos as it means that mine would fit into the NME channel or MTV 2 just like all other upcoming indie bands. I believe my band would be signed by an independent record label, this is because they do local gigs and starting from the bottom not everyone gets spotted by the big 4. However i could see them being on a record label such as XL recordings who have signed a wide variety of indie bands from unknown artists to mainstream bands such as radiohead. I think bands that start from nowhere and build themselves up rely on web 2 pages (Facebook & Myspace) in order to get themselves out there. Promoting free gigs so more people have seen them. This may make them more likely to buy there CD's or DVD's. Plus independent record labels at first rely on this in order to create an local audience which follow them. Everything contributes to this in order to promote themselves and get themselves out there and be noticed by other people to be signed. It all a cycle most bands go through and this process continues to add to the audience following the bands.

Evaluation question 1

In what ways does your music video use develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

Our promo package consisted of 2 parts, firstly the music video and secondly the digipack and advertisement. Looking specifically at the music video we had to find a local band or artist to give us permission to use their track and discuss possibilities of what type of music video i would create in order to match the representation of the band and to appeal to the target audience. We spent alot of time looking at different genres and what type of music videos were generally made within the genre. The genre of Os Vampiros was indie music, so i researched music videos by Vampire Weekend and Arctic Monkeys. Deciding that with a debut video of the band they were quite simplistic and involved the band therefore deciding that that is the route i would go down. Also they involved the band actually performing with in some cases having like an unknown narrative which shows the band outside their performance. To support the representation of the band.

Using my research i decided that i would use Goodwins theory of creating a video that is disjunctive, illustrative or amplificitive and create a disjunctive video, as i felt that that was what alot of indie bands did. As a performance video didn't really have any link to the lyrics of the song. I came up with the idea of using a performance video in their rehearsal hall, as this was a debut video so it wouldn't be a mainstream high budget video, also i got inspiration from Arctic Monkeys debut video " i bet that you look good on the dancefloor" and Vampire Weekend's "a punk"

This video is simplistic, part performance and still representing the band as humorous and creative. This is what alot of my research of indie music agreed on.

With a variety of routes to go down i believe my music video agrees with Goodwins theory of amplificitive, illustrative or disjunctive. I believe my video fits nicely in the disjunctive category as the video has no relevance to the lyrics and is seperate from the song. To achieve this i read and understood the lyrics however talking no notice of them when it came to creating the video. My music video has no narrative however looking into the lyrics the song is slightly depressing as its about the worse day of your life, however I've gone against the conventional sad, slow paced video and contrasted it to create an energetic, lively video as that is the way the band come across.

If i was going to create a performance video i would have to have fast pace editing with a variety of shots, to give the audience a focus.

This way it targets the audience and keeps them interested paired with fast cuts always means the audiences eye has something to focus on. I felt that a performance video alone would not appeal to my target audience which is both males and females between the age of 17-30 according to my background research. So i decided to have a second story line going on at the same time, with no narrative just a sequence of short scenes to represent the band in a humorous rock and roll way.

I made a clear distinction between the performance and the band not performing by having the performance in black and white and keeping the other footage in a sepia theme to make the clear distinction.

When there was a prominant instrument playing whether it being a continual drum beat or a guitar solo i often cut to close ups of that particular instrument to show shot variety and to draw the attention of the audience to this particular band member and instrument.I believed this worked successfully as it added more pace with fast cuts between different angles of the instruments.

I used alot of long shots in order to frame the band as a band together as usually the main focus is on the lead singer with alot of the close ups on the singer alone for example arctic monkeys "i bet that you look good on the dancefloor" had alot of the shots on Alex turner singing. And this is the way they wanted the band to be represented with a clear front man. However shots including close ups of the other band members were used but not as often what i decided to do.

Yet Vampire Weekends "a punk" had some focus on the lead singer but also had alot of focus on the other band memebers which is what the band wanted to do, for each member to have equal chance. This is were using longer shots helped as it shows the whole picture of the band playing together, with the use of close ups not to emphasise the lead singer alone but to draw the eye of the main focus part of the song.

So by incorporating shots of the whole band gave the impression that no one was more superior than the other. And shows all the band members playing their own instruments. With the more cuts between the long shots, close ups and the outside the performance part of the video creates pace within the video to match the pace of the song. Although the song meaning doesn't match the pace of the video, i decided to contrast the meaning of the song with the video itself, as they may create unhappy songs but that doesn't necessarily mean that they want to be represented that way. The song is pacey and thrives in strong individual instruments such as the guitar solos, the drum beat when everything else is quieter, and the singers voice all individually stands out at different parts of the song, this contrasts with other indie songs as the guitaring, drumming is usually in the background compared to the singer which is usually why the singer gathers the main focus. So I'm following the convention to a certain extent of having the main focus on the prominent part of the band because in my case they all are.

I decided to go along with the conventional performance video as that is what my research inspired me to do. As this is an upcoming recently signed band which means many people may not have heard of them. So the first impression is always important and that is another reason why we decided on a performance video so that audience are able to recognise what the band look like if they were ever to see them at a gig or want to buy their music.

Looking into other theories my video doesnt have a narrative so is therefore hard to link to Propps theory of roles as there are no roles to allocate within my video. Or Todorov's equilibrium/disequilibrium as there are no two states of emotions contrasting in my video. This is because its too complex and within my genre the videos are kept simple and easy to follow without a narrative in most cases.
My video was in no way enigmatic as it was kept simple and showing the band for the people who they are. However a semic code is used as it is showing how characters, settings, props take a meaning within a culture. With the influence of smoking as a cool thing and contributes to the rock and roll image. Also 1950's hollywood of style and rebellion. And again the influence of drinking which within todays culture and is seen as a cool thing to do and is what the rock and roll culture is all about, rebelling against todays society. My opening shot is the band walking down a grungy bridge, again shows the rawness of there locality and emphasisng the fact that they aren't big or mainstream. Also their clothing and the way they walk just says to the audience that this band are cool with a certain swagger about them.

The band wanted me to represent them in a cool, laid back, humorous way. Taking this into consideration matched perfectly with the research i found of indie videos as that is they way the majority are represented. I decided that a way to represent the band in a humorous way was too show they love what they doing but not taking it serious, i did this by adding cuts of the band playing each others instruments, but with the camera in the same place it flows much better and isn't as easily noticed as what the audience would think. I also decided to film the band in a car park without them knowing i had started this had shown the bands more natural side and what they are like together. Again contributing to the humorous representation as without them knowing i was recording they were messing about with each other and pulling tricks and showing them laughing was my main plan. I believe this worked well within my video as it lightens it up and shows the band aren't serious people and like to take things as a joke which is exactly what i managed to do. This is similar to Vampire Weekend's "a punk" as although they are playing their instruments they are messing about with different props and is one long take so all changes are made within the frame and contributes to the humorous representation.
Noticing in my research that the style of the band was very important and that the clothes they were tell alot about a person, like i mentioned before first impressions are important.

I researched the types of clothing indie band members were and skinny jeans was the most common type of clothing with polo tops, printed t shirts or shirts. This is the look the band go for anyway so this wasn't a problem and i believe they achieved the indie look well as they look smart however still mocking society by wearing ties and leather jackets. So this continual representation is carried on throughout. Also i decided that a black white colour scheme worked well as the backing curtain in their rehearsal hall was bright green and would draw alot of attention to that so by changing it to black and white meant that all the band members were equal as none were outstandingly noticable and that black and white is much smarter as its simple and is the colour of clothing most indie people wear. This links in with Barthes' cultural code, the image is recognised as 'indie' within the western pop culture.

By coming to a conclusion i decided that my music video matches the indie conventions of a performance video the representation of the band in a cool, rock and roll way. These type of videos by the Indie bands are primarily found on NME channel and MTV 2 as those channels play videos by upcoming Indie bands in order for them to be seen and promoted. I think the label in which my band would suit would be an independent label and potentionally onto XL recordings as they have such a wide variety of bands/artists from upcoming bands to mainstream artists and such a variety in genre's. This follows other indie music videos yet achieving this in my own way but still sticking to the normal conventions. By representing the band in this way it is also influencing the audience that this is what is cool, smoking and drinking and living the rock and roll lifestyle which alot of indie followers aspire to do. So unintentionally its going against todays society, which makes the representation semi-rebellion as expected in artist/band representation. Indie bands today rely on gigs and concerts and that is were the money is made, if a band can perform live then they are worth the audience spending their money on.

advert1 vs advert 2

Given that I decided to make 2 adverts relevant to the band and in the style of adverts similar in genre within NME. i decided to upload both to facebook and let the audience decide which one they felt was more representative of the band after watching my video. I tagged any previous media students, any present media students, any people within the indie genre (band members) or any other people that I felt would be able to give me a valid reason as to why this advert was better and more relevant to the band. This is then allowing the audience to choose which one they would rather see. I will upload several comments later on after I feel people have had enough time to comment and choose. Allowing web 2 to have power over the advert that is used for the band and for my coursework.

DVD advert 2

I decided to make another cover. Before coming up with ideas for my DVD cover i went and took more pictures of the band in hope it would inspire me for the DVD cover. I didn't really get the chance to use my photos and decided to make another DVD cover using them and give the band the choice of which one they would prefer. This is kind of letting the audience decide on what they would rather see and what they feel represents the band the best.
This DVD cover I kind of went on a similar route to the last one when it comes to font size and the style of the font. However i changed the colour scheme from black, white and red to black and white. By having colour photo in the middle of the advert with more colours the advert was already busy enough, so I decided to just keep the writing white and the background black so again the focus of the reader will go straight onto the band. So in both adverts I decided to make the band themselves stand out so the main focus goes straight to them.

With such a detailed bright photo i decided to reduce the information on the front again and get rid of "featuring tracks" this just means the writing on the front is the bare minimal which is what a lot of bands do in order to keep it simple and draw attention to the main graphic or photo. The name of the band, the name of the DVD/CD, the release date, their web 2 pages and the record label.
It also has the rule of thirds to break up the page. With the main third of the band. Several Indie bands do this in order to have their main graphic as the main focus. An example of an advert i looked at in NME was Delphic. Here they have used an abstract graphic as the main design. The name of the band is in the largest font across the middle of the page to draw main focus to the graphic and the name of the band. There is sort of a colour scheme of black, white and greys. And at the bottom is the necessary information, they have only used the bare minimal in order to keep it simple and to have more focus on the graphic. Its simple, catchy and draws the reader in straight away. When reading NME and coming across this advert it caught my focus straight away and that is what I would like to achieve, so I followed similar conventions to these types of Indie adverts in order to achieve the same effect
