How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts?
The second part of our promo package was to create a digipack and an advertisement promoting the DVD within our specific genre. When researching digipacks it was quite difficult to link them to my band, as alot of the indie bands that have released DVD's were much more mainstream and my band aren't mainstream as they aren't known. However what i did was look at bands first DVD's or make a general assumption about all of the digipacks together. I researched digipacks by Kings of Leon, Muse and The Killers. In all 3 there was a distinct pattern of abstract artwork but with some link to the purpose of the DVD which was promoting their live tour. I used a similar convention by making the band unknown to the audience. I did this by getting a photograph i took and cut out each of the band members individually and adding a cover overlay to them hiding their identity. Muse's HAARP had the main title as the largest letters with small silhouettes of the band and there instruments within the writing. I similarly used silhouettes of the band to hide there identity and create an abstract look. This is following the conventions of indie digipacks however still making the band known as the position of the band is shown in the video several times so the audience may be able to link them both.
I decided to keep the font simple which is what my research supported and primarily the bands name was in the largest font with the name of the product slightly smaller and any additional information even smaller. I decided to follow this convention as it is important to promote the bands name so the audience will want to find out more about them or if they want to search their web 2 pages its much easier. On my digipack i stuck with a continual colour scheme which is what kings of leon did with all black but an orange filter over the top. And Muse stuck with a black silver and gold colour scheme, keeping it simple again which relates back to my music video. My colour scheme was red, black and white. These colours go well and by having a black background means whatever is red or white will stand out because of the contrast between the colours.
My background colour is grey, this way it wasn't to strong on the eyes and felt as though the grey worked better than solid black, this is because a lot of indie bands have used solid black so i went against the conventional slightly in order for it to stand out above the rest, plus with it being grey it means the main focus will go straight to the red and white silhouettes rather than anywhere else.
On the back of the digipack is the 4 band members but they are reversed which will make the audience look at it twice as the band members are facing a different way and in a different order to those on the front. However this time there is no cover overlay this is crucial for a debut DVD as the audience its appealing to may not even know what the band look like. I worked out the mainstream bands don't have any band members on the covers as they are so well known they don't have to promote themselves. However with my band just upcoming they need people to know who they are so i felt adding them onto the back was necessary.
The second part was the magazine advert is similar to the digipack as it is much easier to make the link between the advertisement and the product its promoting if they both look the same. I used NME as my research as they promote alot of upcoming local bands not many people have heard of. In NME the advertisement promoting the product is the same artwork, so I decided that's what I would do as it only makes sense. For example Delphic, Acolyte, the artwork promoting the album is the same as the artwork on the album and is the same artwork promoting the album tour, therefore the audience are able to make that distinction between them all knowing they are all promoting the same thing.
I decided to make another advert in order to let the audience chose. My second advert was a photo of the band i had previously taken whilst filming in the car park. The photos were of high quality and i felt was acceptable to use. This advert was still promoting the digipack however instead of the DVD artwork was a phot of the band all stood in a line. I used the rule of thirds to seperate the bands name and the photo from the name of the DVD i was promoting. I changed the colour scheme to just a solid black background with whit only writing as the photo had more colours as the background of the photo was different shades of orange and just had more going on. I felt by adding the band in the advert was necessary as it then allowed the audience to recognise the band and if they are promoting live gigs the audience should know who they are. Or the fact that these photos are on their web 2 pages and then if the audience do their research will be able to make the link with the advert and their web 2 pages such as Facebook and Myspace. I minimised the amount of information on the front. this is because there was so much going on within the photo itself i thought the more simple it is the better. This is what i saw when researching in NME. The Delphic advert in NME had a detailed graphic win the centre and the writing was small and minimal to not draw the attention away from the graphic. I decided to follow this convention as it means the important information is noticed and the as well as the main photo.
Both of my products link back to my music video which is vital to make the connection between the music video, the digipack and the advertisement. In the video the performance part is black and white, this colour scheme is continued onto both my digipack and advertisement with the addition of red to make it more distinctive and quite simply stand out. Red is an eye catching colour. I kept the representation of the band the same also. The way they are positioned on the front of the digipack and the advertisement is the same as the way they are positioned in the music video. All stood together but with a bit of attitude to emphasise the idea that they dont care and this is the representation portrayed throughout the video. Also with the clothing they are wearing in the video is the same style as to what they are wearing on the back cover. To show that they are cool indie boys and rebelling against society with ties and leather jackets and this is the look they want to go for and use to represent them. It's important to maintain this representation as this is what is appealing to the audience and if this changes then it will change the target audience, when its vital to add on to the audience and appeal to a wider variety of people.
When looking at the package as a whole i think it would fit right into todays music industry as live music mainly from indie bands is thriving and my band would fit right in. I believe i went down the right path sticking to conventional indie music videos as it means that mine would fit into the NME channel or MTV 2 just like all other upcoming indie bands. I believe my band would be signed by an independent record label, this is because they do local gigs and starting from the bottom not everyone gets spotted by the big 4. However i could see them being on a record label such as XL recordings who have signed a wide variety of indie bands from unknown artists to mainstream bands such as radiohead. I think bands that start from nowhere and build themselves up rely on web 2 pages (Facebook & Myspace) in order to get themselves out there. Promoting free gigs so more people have seen them. This may make them more likely to buy there CD's or DVD's. Plus independent record labels at first rely on this in order to create an local audience which follow them. Everything contributes to this in order to promote themselves and get themselves out there and be noticed by other people to be signed. It all a cycle most bands go through and this process continues to add to the audience following the bands.
