Finished video

With my music video completed, i stuck with most of my original ideas. Here is my finished product.

A few more pictures

Whilst filming i decided to take a few photographs
just to support the framing idea i wanted to get across and to give to the band to add to there web 2 pages or use elsewhere. In these photos i decided to play around with effects again to see which i thought suited better, and between natural lighting and black and white i believe that they all worked well.

update scedule

Another problem has arose, with a small piece of footage still to complete, the hall where i filmed before has been booked out for another 2 weeks. There are 2 ways in which i can resolve this, one is by re-filming the whole thing again but in another location that way the continuity will still be the same. Or film the footage i need really close up so the background isn't very clear and then for instance if i decide to change the contrast or turn it into black and white then the setting wouldn't be as noticeable as you wouldn't be able to see the difference.

schedule

With a lot of my footage completed i am now able to edit. The footage i gathered was the band playing live from a variety of angles to give me more options and specific close ups on different instruments to specify when the song is playing.
In editing i have had a play around with several effects to see which one i would prefer as the plain simple video may be too boring the same the whole way through.

This is me editing the footage i have, i am playing around with effects and this is high contrast and the brightness increased also. I am not 100% sure whether this is the effect i will use but definitely consider it.

This again is another effect i have been experiencing with, i am interested in this effect as it minimises all the strong colours within the frame and makes everything neutral with nothing gaining the main focus, when all footage is completed i will experiment more with this to see how it all fits together.

08/10/09 plan of action

With a physical copy of the track i have now got completed story boards down to the timing. This will enable me to follow it frame by frame to match it shot by shot, unless i change some of the ideas when i begin filming to get the best end production.
I need to put together a schedule to know when me and the band can film to get the most film time together.

Over the next week i need to start filming and any changes made will have to be added into my planning to ensure the changes have been recognised and noted for when doing my next storyboard.

deconstruction prodigy smack my bitch up

This video does not consist of the band or a band performance; this is a video, which has a narrative.

The whole video is point of view shots, and is within the eyes of one character. This video uses shock tactics, as some of the things that the audience see are vile and disgusting. For example the shots in which you see him being sick, and peeing. It seems very realistic when it comes to these shots and is showing the lifestyle within this person. This attracts the audience in a way in which they want to see what happens next as they don’t believe it could be as sick as what they had previously just seen and this is the case throughout the whole video.

It shows the day of the way a man lives his life. Getting drunk, taking drugs, being sick, lap dancing clubs, clubbing an other party lifestyle day to day routines. The ending is the part of the video which makes the audience confused, as throughout the whole video the audience believe the character is man, and this is because when he is urinating he does it standing up, when he goes into a club he talks and dances with the girls, so subliminally you recognise this character as a man. However at the end of the video when the unknown character is lying on the bed after performing sexual acts with a girl, the character stands up and looks in the mirror and the reflection the audience see is a female. So it suggests that men and women are equal in a sense that people assume its always men that live the hardcore party, promiscuous lifestyle whereas this video suggests different.

The editing is very subtle like within cuts, the takes are very long as its in the point of view of a character so its like what he is seeing, when in real life looking about there are no cuts apart from when blinking, so this is the same case for the character. The only cuts are when he changes setting like from the toilet to the club for example but in some cases it shows the journey from one place to another.

The lighting is generally dark lighting as the majority is within a club and usually clubs don’t have normal, natural lighting its all-artificial strobe lights, the only high key lighting is when in the bathroom when getting changed, as that is usually the case in a real life situation, you wouldn’t have strobe lighting in a bathroom, so this video is just matching conventional lighting within real life situations.

This video is disjunctive, as the lyrics of the song don’t match with what the audience see. However the pace of the song is synchronising with the pace of the editing and the camera movement. So it all links better together and flows much easier.

deconstruction vampire weekend a punk

A punk was Vampire weekends debut video so all focus has to be on them. The way in which they did this was by making their video in a white room although its not completely white the majority of it is, therefore by them wearing different coloured clothes it makes them stand out compared to the white wall and there is nothing else to distract the audience from looking/focusing on anything else. The grey flooring adds to the verisimilitude as a complete white room would not come across as a real place you would perform whereas just white walls and a grey flooring does. Also because the majority of the filming is long shots it means that the whole room would have to be white and a complete white screen may be too much.

The types of shots used are a majority of long shots and medium close ups. This is so that when long shots are up the focus is on the band altogether and when its on the medium close ups its to emphasise the focus on a particular part of the band, for example the singer/guitarist, medium close up with him in the foreground and the rest of the band in the background to show that they are still included and that they are a band and not so all the focus is on one particular band member.

The editing is very clever as it is all jump cuts, however you wouldn’t notice this as the space between the cuts aren’t very long so it sometimes seems seamless, when in actual fact its not. The camera is static throughout and its what is within the frame that changes and moves. The reason for this could be to make it different and interesting as not many other videos do this throughout the whole video and therefore makes this one stand out amongst the rest.

The story within the video is like as if time is passing, like a time lapse, the costume changes and setting changes support this. In the beginning it starts off with the band just playing then they change into brighter clothes and then change into winter clothes and it appears as though its snowing and the lighting is lower to give the impression its darker and colder. This supports the idea that its like changing seasons. Another part of the video would be summer with little hand made fishes on the screen and a blue filter to give the idea of water. Although its not real fishes they want the audience to see that they aren’t real and it’s the same with the costume change, they do it within the frame quickly. So the transitions are obvious and everything that happens appears within the screen.

Schedule for next week

-Get a physical copy of the track
-Start drawing some story boards (get ideas down on paper)
-Begin filming

This will mean il be on track to following the deadlines and i don't think that it should take to long to film, it will take longer to edit due to the fact its alot of jump cuts and variety of different angled shots. Also to get the timing altogether i will have to film the song at all different angles and then i will have more variety when it comes to the editing.

Proposal

I plan to create a music video for a band called Os Vampiros. The song is called ‘Worst day of your life’. Os Vampiros are a 4 piece indie band . I did some research into other indie bands as to what genre of music video they have created and the way the band are represented.

The audience are likely to be between the ages of 17-30 the reason being because the band use local venues and gigs to get their music heard and the places they play are places which are mainly suitable for 18 year olds and over. However this isn’t always the case. The band also use web 2 to get their music across such as face book and myspace, however for people to add them they will have needed something to tick it off, such as seeing them live. The sex of the audience isn’t likely to be more of one sex than the other. Although stereotypically you would think it would be a more male dominated audience, in the venues they play their gigs there tend to be a equal balance of males and females. The audience are likely to live a party lifestyle as the majority of the time they play is on the weekends and late at night.

My video wont have a storyline as I feel that the majority of indie bands tend to not have a storyline but have a performance, or incorporate a performance and some sort of storyline together. However I feel I will have a balance of a performance and just the band behaving in a way that they come across when they play live, which is slightly comical in some cases but mostly dedicated. Other videos i have looked at were Arctic Monkeys debut video 'i bet that you look good on the dancefloor'. This video is just a performance based video of them playing live in a rehearsal hall which is the sort of idea I'm going to do. The video also has a slightly 80's feel to it, this is because of the filter over the top which minimizes all the colours and makes it look grainy and grey, potentially to say the band i got inspiration from bands in the 80's or wish that it was the 80's. The video is simple and involves the band performing with different close ups of specific instruments to draw the attention to that specific instrument, emphasizing it.

(I was unable to get the video to show so following this link will allow you to see it.)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xm69M3jtZl4

In the beginning I will have the band performing live and emphasis on the instruments which are stronger at that point in the song (e.g. if it starts off which guitar only, a close up of guitar strings etc). The video will be shot indoors either in their rehearsal hall or in a white room the reason being means I have more control on what the setting looks like and with such busy schedules indoors means that the weather or other natural interferences wont have any effect on the video. The reason for the white room would be that it means the focus is all on the band with no background clutter drawing the audiences attention away from the band. The other option being in the bands rehearsal spot, this would be a more natural setting showing the background of the band and how they play on a day to day basis, giving it the feel that they are just naturally rehearsing. The verse is much more slower and not as upbeat which is the point in which the video wont be showing a performance, this is because when the chorus kicks in the band will be able to be more lively and put more of a show on in the performance part of the video. Also because when I was researching other videos which have used the same idea as I want to such as Vampire weekend- A punk, has had indie pop songs so its not as hard or loud when in the video, so by using the slower part of the song to have fun with and keep by the rules so im not breaking them.

In the ideas of the video the band will be represented as a fun loving band as I will be adding comical elements to portray this, such as juts of the band dancing around each other, or jump cuts of the band dancing around, adds to the slightly humour effect I am aiming for as that’s the way the band represent themselves when playing live.

I think I would find this type of video on either the NME channel or MTV 2 the reason being is these are the 2 channels that play videos from small emerging bands that are just joining the scene and also the videos they play are very indie/rock and roll based. So these types of channels would be perfect for the video I would like to create. This video would promote the band as a fun loving indie band that enjoy playing live and don’t take it too seriously, like they are creating music for the fact that this is what they love doing and not just for the money.

inspiration

I looked at some videos on youtube as to what sort of video i would like to create, the videos i have viewed have similarities in the setting and how the video was made.

Astronauts and all

I like this video as it incorporates the live performance, and has like them in the video without performing which shows variety. I like the jump cut static shots as it gives the effect that they are disappearing and reappearing. And sometimes this looks slightly comical as they seem to just be moving about without any transitions. The effect of the white room just polishes everything off, it just looks clean and the effect the balls have just brightens it up and breaks up the video and the just shows that the people behind it can edit well enough to have them singing and playing instruments as well as the jump cuts.

Vampire weekend

I like the way this video has been made, it is alot of jump cuts
however gives the impression that has been one long take as
you see them run off the screen and quickly changing their
clothes. Also their seems to be a slight narrative as it goes
through the 4 seasons, so they are using a time lapse along
side the singing, giving a slight contrast that time has past
visually but at the same time, time hasn't past visually. The Astronauts and All video
too have used a white room and shows that the surrounding
doesn't give much away and makes all focus on them and
on what they are wearing, part of the visual styling. Also
with alot of lights on them means that there aren't going to
be any shadows or anything to effect this fresh look that it gives.

Here are some pictures i took at their rehearsals

Os Vampiros

Os vampiros are a 4 piece indie rock band from torquay, this includes Oli, Lloyd, Matt and Phil.

Os Vampiros play on a regular basis around the local party scene, from Indie bars like Rude Bar and Studio 22 to smaller pubs like the Spinning Wheel and to larger venues like the Hippo in Plymouth were the likes of Funeral For A Friend have recently played. All these places are typical indie scenes, which regularly get upcoming local bands to play. This means the type of audience to watch them play are likely to be a more younger audience between the ages of around 17-30 as pubs don't have an age restriction and younger people ten to try and get into them. The type of people is individual music lovers that don't follow the mainstream pop, r'n'b music. each will have their own individual preference but as a whole tend to all gather in the same places. Also with places like these there tend to be a variation of male and females there aren't more of one sex than the other. And because they are local, a part of the audience are likely to be dedicated fans and there friends.

the genre of the music is supported in the type of clothes they wear and the places that they play. the clothes they wear are the typical skinny jeans, polo tops/shirts combination, with pumps and maybe cardigans/hoodies/waistcoat. This is the type of clothing that is stereotypically matched with indie scene, although it means individual personal preferences are important.

The band have been described as sounding like arctic monkeys, Liam Gallagher kind of music, however they are way more mainstream than what Os vampiros sound like. And although they are smaller local band i don't feel they sound like that, and a lot of their fans seem to agree with me.

Location idea

Rehearsal Halls this gives it the idea that its not in a studio and possibly shows that its just like how they rehearse. also it doesn't say to much about the like no important factors contributing to the representation. Also it would be much easier to control the surroundings, if its outside its hard to control the weather and any other factors which would effect the performance.

White room

Potential clothing ideas

skinny jeans

Within the indie music genre, fashion plays a huge part on the way the band are represented. The reason i have chosen skinny jeans is the fact that bthe band wear this type of clothing anyway so its just continuing their own fashion sense. Also that is what alot of the other indie bands wear, so im just following this rule so that they look like they are following the fashion and not standing out to be individual.

Pumps

I think the band should wear pump like shoes, as pumops are quite informal but would put across this kind of relaxed scruffy kinda look. I dont want them to look like uperclass snobs, i would prefer that they looked a bit messy and untidy, as that is the way indie bands tend to be portrayed and represented in their videos.

Polo tops

Similar with the pumps, polo tops arent very formal and can look scruffy which is continuing the look i would like to go for. In a sense it is kind of a dirty look as similar bands play endless gigs on long tours and chances are they wont have packed much clothes and living the party lifestyle. So by wearing unironed polo tops o shirts, with dirty pumps and tight scruffy skinny jeans, portrays the band in this kind of way, and this is just following the rule similar bands tend to do.

This would relate to the audience in a sense that they arent a upper class band and by wearing ordinary clothes from the highstreet it relates to the younger audience who wear similar clothes. And with indie music on the male side of the audience they would wear similar clothes just maybe wear it in a different way. So just by the fashion itself it can relate to the audience in a more natural down to earth way as they arent to fussed as to what they look like and thats what alot of people are like, they dont care for other peoples opinons.

Illustrative- illustrates lyrics to visuals

Amplificative- amplifies certain ideas "come to daddy"

Disjunctive- the visuals and the lyrics don't match

Keywords:
  • Disjunctive: A technique to go against the representations of the music.
  • Amplified: A technique used to 'amplify' (reinforce) a distinctive idea (exajurates)
  • Illustrative: A technique used to reinforce the lyrics of the music.

Chris Cunningham took a drum and base track and added a disjunctive narrative as the video had no relation to the genre of music.

Michelle Gondry also used a disjunctive narrative as the music did not relate to the genre of music.

Choosing a band

I have faced a few problems when it comes to choosing my band, such as actually being face to face and open ideas as the band were not local, so i had to go out and start again and decided to choose another band. i Went out and asked a few people i know about whether or not they would be willing to do this. i received confirmation from a band called Os Vampiros. This way i would possibly be able to incorporate them into the video itself and use them to suggest ideas or give their opinion on it.

Ejectorseat

I am going to make a video for one of the songs by a band called Ejectorseat.
The band consist of 4 members: *
Band Members

Ejectorseat are

Pete Backler - Singing / Guitar

Gary (Barrington) Cole - Guitar / Singing

Hurricane Andrew Foster - Drums

Phil Tonge - Bass Guitar / Singing

I dont personally know this band however about a year ago they added me on myspace to get there music more known, i speak to the guitarist occasionally about there music and they are more than happy for me to use there stuff and would like a copy of it at the end.
The band are a 4 piece from Derby, they seem to be getting bigger and have been on tour.
I would say that they are quite pop-rock and their songs are very different to each other with the odd acoustic song. so i think by using Ejectorseat means less pressure as with such a variety of songs and quite a few to choose from means i can pick the one i get the best idea for.
They are on myspace on my page so if anyone wants to have a look feel free to add them, they are more than happy with that

Madonna-Music

In this video madonna is represented in a rich way, were she is the leader of her group that like to go out partying all the time and drink expensive alcohol and go riding round in a gold limo with a chauffeur. With the fur coat and the cowboy hat emphasises the rich side of her as fur coats are associated with the rich. when dancing in a club with other females portrays madonna as some sort of lesbian icon, which again is emphasized when the scene of her in a stripper club and then continuing the party in her limo.

Madonna- Dont cry for me argentina

In this video madonna is represented in a more elegant way, shown by what she is wearing and how her hair is, as all these factors make her look more classy. She is portrayed as a beauty queen who everyone looks up to. This music video is obviously for a film and so madonna is represented in a way that would link with the film. She is portrayed as a highly respected role model with the way she is moving is very soft and gentle and is like everyone is to look up to her. This links with the song as its not a fast pacey song, its a slow ballad, with very gentle sounds and this links with the music video. possibly someone famous as its like she is talking infront of a huge crowd which all seem to love her as by the end they are all cheering and screaming
