History of the pop video

-It is a marriage of sound and vision is what a music video has been deemed as.
-The first colour music video was in 1950
-1955 Music videos chnged, the word teenager was created and had the representation of rebellion. Rock'n'Roll was created and Elvis Presley changed the music scene
-1967 Top of the pops was created and if a band were unable to make it or perform live then they would send in a video of them singing the song, this was an increase in music videos but for practical reasons.
-1979 Queen produced Bohemian Rhapsody but was too complex to do live so a music video was needed. It took a record breaking 3 hours to create and cost £3500 to make which in the music video industry is very cheap.

Beginning of MTV
-MTV made pop videos come to life and accessible to people in their homes.
-August 1981 MTV was created and the first music video shown was video killed the radio star by Buggles, which was created in just 1 day.

-This video was a disjunctive video and the director Russell Mulcahy thought this was necessary so the audience were unable to predict what was going to happen
-At first MTV was only accessible to several thousand households which isn't many at all, considering howmany it could be reaching.
-Also the minimal amounts of music videos they had which was around 200 as the music industry were not investing in making them as they felt it was a dead end and would not make the money back from creating them
-however MTV were hoping that if it was successful more record companies would invest in making more videos.
- Now 300 million homes have access to MTV and is available in 83 different countries
-A music video by Madonna which tells the story in a day in the life of Madonna which caused controversy, so in this case the video was shown in only the UK and not in America

-Directors of music videos realised that the band or artist didn't necessarily have to be in the video itself and could be about something else in a non conventional way. The first band to do this was Talk Talk-It's my life and was directed by Tim Pope.
